2 Reasons You Should Consider Hiring A Professional Mold Inspection

Samantha Nelson

Mold inside your home is not something you want to neglect because it can pose quite a health danger to you and anyone living inside your home. Exposure to mold spores in the air and on surfaces over time can lead to serious issues, and the best way to manage mold is to first find out if it is present in your home. Here are some reasons that you may want to hire a professional home mold inspection.

Evidence of a Leak or Moisture Problem

One of the first indicators that you may have a mold problem and want to hire an inspection is due to there being signs of a moisture leak. Moisture leaks can start and stop then later start up again, building up the moisture within a wall or crevice inside your home. Moisture leaks can seep under your foundation walls and saturate the carpeting and padding along the wall. And if the area is under a couch or other furniture you may not even notice the area is wet for days, weeks, and months.

Moisture damage to an interior wall from a roof leak or plumbing leak can saturate the drywall and insulation hidden in the wall and the only indication you might have is some slight discoloration to the wall and the paint. Watch for signs such as these in your home and if you find any signs of a water leak with staining or discoloration, it is best to have a mold inspector check the specific area and the air inside your home to see if mold spores are present.

Your mold inspector can check for mold spores on surfaces in different areas of your home. They can also complete an air sample test in different rooms to see if there is a higher count of mold spores in one area compared to another. They will also be able to determine the type of mold, if any, that is growing in your home.

Musty and Earthy Smells in Your Home

Another reason you should hire a professional mold inspection is if you can smell a musty or earthy smell within your home. This can be common in the basement space of your home but is not something you want to ignore.

Check into a mold inspection, especially if you notice musty smells after a heavy rainstorm or if the weather has been extra humid lately. High humidity can increase the moisture in your home and pose a risk of mold growth, and a heavy rainstorm can cause a leak that you may not know has begun. For example, if one of your basement windows was left open a crack and rainfall have leaked into the window, causing moisture damage and mold growth to the window frame.
